MG Motor New Zealand has finally unveiled full pricing details for its much anticipated MG4 fully electric hatchback.

The firm has announced that, for the moment at least, it will only offer the MG4 in its 64kWh battery guise, as well as in its more long-range 77kWh battery guise. The more affordable 51kWh variant is “under consideration”.

The 4’s pricing doesn’t quite equal the MG ZS EV standard range’s $49,990 price tag.

The range kicks off at $51,990 for the 64kWh MG4 Excite, with the more generously spec’d 64kWh MG4 Essence priced from $54,990. The flagship 77kWh model will only be offered in an Essence grade, and will be priced from $63,990.

Both 64kWh models pack a single 150kW/250Nm motor capable of hitting 100kph in 7.9 seconds. The lighter base model carries a range rating of 450km to a charge, whilst the Essence can travel up to 435km to a charge, MG says.

The 77kWh model, meanwhile, ramps up the range factor to 530km on the WLTP cycle – making it the cheapest EV on sale today capable of travelling more than 500km to a charge. It’s also more powerful than the other models, its motor rated at 180kW.

MG Motor New Zealand notes in its release that both the MG4’s 51kWh base model and the go-faster 77kWh dual-motor ‘X-Power’ hot hatch are under consideration, and could join the range in the second half of 2023.

MG boasts that the 64kWh grade is capable of recharging at speeds of up to 138kW. This means an owner can charge their car from 10% battery capacity to 80% in just 28 minutes when using a 150kW DC rapid charger.

“Excitement and anticipation has been building since we confirmed MG4 will be made available for fans of no emission motoring,” said Patrick Bourke, Country Manager for MG New Zealand.

“We believe the MG4 will be the reason for many more people to make the switch to fully electric vehicle thanks to an impressive range of 530km WLTP from the 77kWh battery, outstanding driving dynamics courtesy of 50:50 weight distribution - plus the fact it’s one of the best looking new EV’s available.”

Regarding spec, MG states that all models will come standard with the brand’s MG Pilot safety technology suite, as well as a 7-inch digital cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and more.

Essence models trade black fabric upholstery for synthetic leather and cloth, while also adding satnav, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, and two-tone paint in the form of a black roof amongst other features.

The release answers some of the unanswered questions from MG New Zealand’s last press release, where it confirmed the price of the 64kWh MG4 Essence, but none of the nameplate’s other variants.
