South Australian police have pulled over a man driving with hand-painted number plates on his car.

Police stopped a 26-year-old man in a Mitsubishi sedan just after 2am in Adelaide's north for allegedly driving without lights.

'Police stopped the man and on closer examination, discovered the number plates had in fact been painted over and hand painted with different characters and a helpful message,' a statement from South Australian Police said.

Underneath the hand-painted numbers was the phrase 'Not stolen OK'.

Police said the driver was disqualified, and the car was unregistered and uninsured.

The Adelaide man was charged with driving while disqualified, driving with a defaced number plate, driving an unregistered and uninsured car and driving at night without lights.
