A woman has died after a tree fell onto a car and a building in Rotorua.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Arawa St, in the city centre outside Rotorua Primary School, around 10.45am.

'It has been established that the sole occupant of the car has died and emergency services are working to remove her from the vehicle,' police said in a statement.

Arawa St is closed and diversions have been put in place.

Police said staff working in the building on Arawa St were okay.

In a separate incident, two trees fell on Long Mile Rd, near the Redwoods at the eastern end of Rotorua.

One hit a car but no-one was inside at the time.

A tree has also come down across Sala St, Rotorua.

Both Long Mile Rd and Sala St are completely blocked and traffic management is in place.

Police ask that people stay away from this forest area.

Bay of Plenty Police ask that people avoid all unnecessary travel and avoid low lying roads and coastal areas across Bay of Plenty due to high water levels.
