After delivering the most successful New Zealand podcast to date, Stuff presents its next major podcast series - Heavy Metal: The murder of John Reynolds.

Black Hands' Martin van Beynen is back, alongside investigative journalist Blair Ensor, to take a look at a brutal killing that devastated a family over two decades ago; the ripples are still being felt today.

Over three episodes they explore what happened on that rainy April Sunday in 1996, as well as the police investigation and some interesting avenues of Reynolds' past.

Episode one: Lying in a pool of blood

It's Sunday. Scrap metal dealer John Reynolds opens his yard for the morning, but business is slow. That night he doesn't come home and his brother Michael goes looking for him; it's dark in the yard and Michael needs a torch. That's when he sees the body.

Episode two: A murky past

John 'The Pom' Reynolds moved to New Zealand as a young man, starting a family and building a life here. But his stories from his old life involved shootings and shady deals. Then there was the rail yard fight that left another man dead.

Episode three: Denials and dead ends

It was a brutal murder of a family man. Somebody knows who did it, but they're not talking. Not to the police anyway.

John Reynolds was bludgeoned to death at his Christchurch scrap metal yard in April, 1996.

WHAT'S A PODCAST ANYWAY?

Podcasts are audio features you listen to on a digital device. You need a phone, a tablet or any computer to listen.

Podcast devotees typically listen on their phone with headphones plugged in. You can plug in, hit play then slip your phone in your pocket and enjoy.

Once you find a podcast you're keen on, you can listen to it whenever you like.

You can download a single episode or an entire series. You can subscribe to get every update. You can pause, save and share.

You do need an internet connection to find a podcast. But once downloaded, podcasts can be listened to offline.

HOW TO LISTEN

All you really need to know is what kind of device you're on: Is it an Apple? Or an Android? Or are you on a desktop or laptop computer?

Podcasts are played through an app on your device. Those are the little icons scattered all over your screen. Which app to use depends on which device.

If it's an Apple, you're best to listen via iTunes. Just press or click on these highlighted words and the iTunes app will open on the Heavy Metal podcast. If it doesn't, you will probably need to download iTunes - it's easy to follow the prompts if you need to do that.

If you're on some other mobile device, it's likely to be an Android. You can listen via the Stitcher app. Just press or click on these highlighted words and you'll be delivered to the Heavy Metal feed on Stitcher.

There are other mobile apps that play podcasts. You can copy this URL https://rss.whooshkaa.com/rss/podcast/id/2711 and paste it into the app to get the podcast via an RSS feed.
