Two people dead and several injured after separate crashes south of Levin

Two people are dead after back-to-back crashes in the Horowhenua district on Tuesday night.
The first crash, involving a car and what is believed to be a truck, occurred on State Highway 1 in Ōhau, south of Levin, just before 5pm.
Police confirmed one person died in the crash, with two others taken to Wellington Hospital by helicopter, one with critical injuries.
A further person involved in the crash was being taken by ambulance to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition.
A St John spokeswoman said three ambulances and two rescue helicopters were sent to the scene about 4.40pm.
Not two hours later another crash on the stretch of SH1, near Manakau, claimed another life, with one person confirmed dead in a collision between a car and a truck north of the intersection with Waikawa Beach Rd about 7.10pm.
The crash, which occurred about 7.10pm, had blocked the road.
