Nelson bush fire: Resident said fire 'just took over'

A Nelson resident has described the moment he saw the Nelson bush fire start beside his property.

Rob Bradley saw the fire move towards his property as it 'took over the fields' nearby. 

The wind was blowing away from his property, but then the fire started 'creeping along' the perimeter of the fences, he told 1News.

It was then he decided to evacuate his home.

'It just took over and then it went straight up the face of the forestry opposite my house.'

After Bradley evacuated his property, he moved into emergency accommodation at Wakatu Lodge.

'Civil defence is just great, they took us in and they fed us and gave us accommodation,' he told 1News. 'We really don't know what we're going back to this morning.'

Bradley will be waiting for feedback from Civil Defence when it will be safe for him to return.
