Dairy fire in the Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie

The dairy is on the corner of Duncan Terrace and Kilbirnie Crescent.

Fire crews have put out a blaze at a Wellington dairy which spread into a neighbouring building.

The Devyish Superette, in Kilbirnie Crescent, is directly opposite the Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre.

Flames could be seen through windows of the two storey building.

The fire, about midday on Sunday, spread to another building, to the south, and home to a Thai restaurant.

Metlink announced four bus stops in Kilbirnie could remain closed until midday Monday as a result of the blaze.

Fire and emergency worked to douse the flames, which were spreading into a neighbouring building.

Fire and Emergency used cherry pickers to douse the fire.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said 14 appliances were at the commercial/residential property, which was 'well-involved' with fire.

All people had been accounted for.

A fire investigator would look into the cause of the fire.

A large amount of smoke could be seen over Kilbirnie.

There appears to be extensive damage to the upstairs of the wooden building.

The fire is in the Devyish Superette and is spreading into the neighbouring Thai restaurant.

Fire and Emergency work to put out a large fire in a dairy in Kilbirnie, Wellington.

Senior station officer Pete Burtonwood said one person from the dairy was treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was under control by about 2pm.

Metlink said four bus stops in Kilbirnie were closed on Sunday and could remain closed till midday Monday as a result of the fire.

They were: one bus stop on Kilbirnie Crescent at Childers Terrace, two bus stops outside the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre and one stop outside the Kilbirnie Library.
