One person has died and a part of State Highway 1 has been closed following a crash between a car and truck in South Otago.

Emergency services were called to the crash on the Milton Highway (SH1) near Lakeside Rd at 2.10pm on Friday.

Senior Sergeant Stan Leishman confirmed a person had died after the car and truck collided head on. Only one person was in the car. It remained unclear if there were any other injuries.

He said the crash happened 200 metres north of the Lakeside Rd intersection with the Milton Highway.

A police spokeswoman said the police serious crash unit had been advised.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Brent Dunn said two crews from Milton were helping police condon off the crash site.

Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesman Steven Mann said the road was closed.

'Road users are advised to seek an alternate route or delay their journey until the crash site has been cleared.

'The nature of the crash means that the closure is likely to be in place for some time,' he said.
