A person is critically injured after a crash between a car and milk tanker in North Canterbury.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Oxford Rd near Poyntzs Rd, west of Cust, about 7.25am on Friday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Brent Dunn said one person was trapped in the car, and firefighters used rescue equipment to cut the person out.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the person was taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter in a critical condition.

Two people had minor injuries and did not require an ambulance.

Oxford Rd is on Canterbury's Inland Scene Route.

A police spokeswoman said the road reopened about 1pm.

The police Serious Crash Unit would investigate the crash.
