A motorcyclist has died after a crash between a bike and car on the Waimate Highway in Glenavy.

The accident happened north of Waitaki Bridge at 11.50am, police said. The crash involved three motorcyclists and a car.

The motorcyclist died at the scene, and the bridge was expected to remain closed until about 6pm while police attend the incident. Diversions are in place.

A police spokesperson said the two other motorcyclists were taken to Timaru Hospital with minor injuries.

'Nobody in the car was injured,' the spokesperson said.

Earlier, the crash caused a backup of traffic on the northern side of the bridge, Glenavy Store employee Ethan Zheng said.

He said traffic was 'backed up a long way' outside the store.

'A lot of people were caught up in the traffic, and stopped and bought stuff from our store.'
