Auckland breaks record for the most number of rain days in August

Sunday, 1 September 2019

A sudden stratospheric warming event 30-50 km above Antarctica is linked to the cool start to spring in New Zealand.

Auckland has broken a weather record for the most rain days in a calendar month.

According to Metservice, the City of Sails clocked up a total of 29 rain days during August - but that doesn't necessarily mean it was the wettest.

The record, is based on the number of days that 0.1mm or more of rain was recorded at Auckland Airport.

The previous record was set in August 2010 when 27 rain days were recorded.

Although, the total amount of rain was higher than average for August, Metservice meteorologist Tom Adams said he wanted to 'dampen down' the theory that it was the wettest month overall.

Last month was instead the fifth wettest August in Auckland with 189.4mm in total.

The wettest August was in 1992 when 218.4mm of rain fell.

July 1998 was the wettest month in Auckland since records began in 1962 - at 304.4mm of rainfall.

Metservice is expected to release a more detailed report on Tuesday about the weather patterns seen throughout the country during August.

The first day of spring on Sunday was dry in Auckland. Metservice was also predicting a fine day with high cloud on Monday but later in the week more rain was expected.
