A man was flown by rescue helicopter to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition after a single-vehicle crash near Murchison.

Police were notified just before 10pm on Friday. A police spokeswoman said the vehicle had crashed off a bank along the Kawatiri-Murchison Highway section of State Highway 6, near the Mangles River, about 10 minutes out of Murchison.

The man was the only person in the vehicle, she said.

St John spokeswoman Neha Concisom said two St John vehicles attended the crash.

'We transported a patient in serious condition to Nelson Hospital by heli,' Concisom said.

Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter pilot Barry McAuliffe said the chopper crew was called just after 10pm and arrived at Nelson Hospital with the injured man about midnight.
