The end of the school holidays is set to bring weather misery to Aucklanders.

MetService has issued a strong wind warning and heavy rain watch for Auckland and Northland, starting on Monday, with fears winds could get up to 120kph.

Rain was expected to get heavier as the wind strengthened on Monday evening.

They've also warned people to tie down their trampolines and watch for fallen trees as wind gusts could be strong in exposed places.

Meteorologist Stephen Glassey said Northland would be the first to feel the brunt of the weather system with rain and strong easterly winds setting in on Monday morning.

'The rain and strong winds will then gradually spread south over the rest of the North Island and Marlborough during the remainder of Monday and Tuesday.'

Meteorologist Melissa Oostervijk said the orange wind warning and the heavy rain watch was in place for Auckland from 6pm on Monday evening until 8am on Tuesday.

Strong easterly winds – which were a different direction to what Aucklanders were used to – could bring on the forecast gusts.

Oostervijk said Auckland didn't get wind warnings regularly and it was an event that could have impact on some places as the wind speed had the potential to cause damage.

It was important to look out for fallen trees and power poles if they are hit the wrong way, she said.

Rain was expected too - with it beginning during the day on Monday and getting heavier in the evening as the wind strengthened.

Oostervijk said Tuesday morning in Auckland would see the severe weather continue – but it would gradually ease over the day.

Wednesday would see cloudy periods and a few showers.

There would be some strong westerly winds during the day that would also ease throughout the day.

Thursday and Friday would be similar to Wednesday, Oostervijk said, but the weather would continue to ease as the week goes on.

According to MetService, Auckland would see a high of 16C on Monday and an overnight low of 12C.
