The first image showing the damage inside SkyCity's Convention Centre has been revealed.

A SkyCity spokeswoman confirmed the image, which was taken on Wednesday while the fire raged on, was inside from the Convention Centre.

In the photo the roof has been partially burnt and damaged material from the structure can be seen hanging over construction equipment on the floor of the building.

An image from inside the damaged Sky City International Convention Centre has been captured.

Fire and emergency New Zealand area commander, Richard Twomey, said engineers will assess the state of the fifth floor later on Thursday.

The bulk of the firefighters are still outside, however a few are inside, accessing through safe stairwells, he said.

The SkyCity fire started at 1.10pm on Tuesday and has continued to burn for three days.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service advised people to stay out of the city if they could, close the windows and turn off external ventilation to their homes.

On Thursday morning Twomey confirmed the fire was now under control, but hot spots would continue to be dampened down.
