A property has been evacuated due to the fire, as a precaution.

As many as 10 helicopters have been fighting the fire simultaneously, alongside four ground crews.

Fire and Emergency NZ said the fire began on the edge of the Te Papanui Conservation Park this morning. It has now spread to land owned by the Dunedin City Council.

Hot and windy conditions fanned the fire early on.

Conditions are forecast to improve tonight, however, with light showers possible from about 4am.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

Smoke from the fire can be seen throughout a large area of South Otago.

Those who are sensitive to smoke are advised to stay inside with windows and doors shut, and air conditioning turned off.
