Road closed in Auckland CBD after car hits fifth-floor car park wall

Lucy Lane in Auckland Viaduct precinct was closed after a carpark overlooking the lane was damaged by an SUV driving into a wall.

A firefighter says it was lucky a car which hit the wall of a fifth-floor car park didn't smash through it and go over the edge.

Firefighters were called to the car park on Lucy Lane in Auckland CBD just before midday on Sunday.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Carren Larking said 'extensive damage' was done to the fifth floor wall, and the road below had been closed as there were concerns the wall was not stable.

A BMW X5 crashed into the wall of the fifth floor of a car park in Auckland's Viaduct precinct, on the corner of Lucy and Pakenham lanes.

There was no one with the vehicle when firefighters arrived, she said.

A Stuff journalist at the scene said the car park was also closed off to vehicles trying to enter it.

Lucy Lane was closed out of concern the wall may fall.

The black BMW X5 involved in the incident had suffered damage to its bonnet and grill.

A station officer at the scene said it was lucky the car hadn't smashed through the wall and gone over the edge.

The wall that was hit was 'extensively damaged'.

The journalist said the car appeared to have driven over a floor-mounted barrier, hit the wall and then reversed back over the barrier.

At 12.30pm, Larking said firefighters had left the scene in the hands of the building owner.

The road remained closed, she said.
