WATCH: The Bay of Plenty volcano is New Zealand's most active and on Monday afternoon it erupted.
The Whakaari/ White Island volcano erupted around 2.30pm with Geonet raising the alert level to four of five.
A plume of smoke is seen above White Island at 6.20am on Tuesday, December 10, a day after an eruption.
The volcanic alert level was lowered the 3 at 4.25pm on Monday. Geonet called the eruption 'an impulsive, shortlived event' and said it affected the crater floor.
