Man saves dog from 'well involved' West Auckland house fire

A man was seen rushing into a burning home in the early hours of Tuesday morning to save a dog.

Fire and Emergency NZ received multiple calls to a house fire on Seymour Rd in Sunnyvale, West Auckland, around 12.40am.

Shift manager Kaisey Cook said the home was 'well involved' on arrival and firefighters transmitted a second alarm calling for more resources.

A witness told Stuff a man was seen rushing into the burning house, reappearing moments later carrying a dog 'alive and well'.

Cook said the fire was 10 metres by 10m in size and took about an hour to put out.

No injuries were reported and all people were accounted for.

As of 5.50am, one crew remained on site.

Firefighters had left the scene by 7.30am, but the smell of smoke still lingered in the air.

A burnt out exercise bike could be seen in what remained of the home.

Orange tape surrounded the property with a notice saying 'no access, keep out'.

The roof of the house was completely burnt and nothing appeared to have been saved.

A resident who lives just a few doors down from the scene said she heard crackling and thought it was fireworks. 

A neighbour called her to say there was a fire and she needed to get out of her house.

The woman, who didn't want to be named, said she walked out to see 'massive' flames that were higher than the roof of the home.

She said she didn't know who lived at the house but the community wanted to find the out so they could offer help.

'It really put things into perspective,' she said.

Materialistic items weren't important, but family was, she said.

The woman said she went home to look after her two children afterwards but couldn't sleep.

'Dedicated' firefighters were working until around 3am to put the fire out, she said.

'We are so lucky.'

Cook said a fire investigator had attended but the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
