A former district councillor has died following a quad-bike crash  on a rural property in the central North Island.  

Ronald Frew, 53, was riding an ATV in Ohakune when the incident occurred on Monday morning. 

His family were  'deeply shocked', his mother Peggy Frew said.

'He was coming up a very steep hill on a four wheeler and it slipped backwards, landed on top of him and killed him.' 

Police and an ambulance were called to the address on Kopurutuku Rd about 10.40am. Frew died at the scene.

He had been an elected councillor 2007 in Ruapehu District before resigning in 2011.

Frew's death is being investigated by Worksafe NZ with police assistance. The matter has been referred to the coroner.
