Emergency services attending helicopter crash near Taupō

A man in his 20s is in a stable condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital after a helicopter crash near Taupō, which left two injured.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Taharua Rd about 7am on Monday, a police spokeswoman said.

There were a few helicopters flying in the area at the time and she said one of the other helicopters flew the passengers from the crashed chopper back to the hanger.

A St John spokeswoman said one person had been seriously injured, while another was moderately injured. 

The person with serious injuries was flown to Hawke's Bay Hospital, while the other with moderate injuries was taken by road to Taupō Hospital. 

A Hawke's Bay Hospital spokeswoman said a man in his 20s was in a stable condition. 

Northern fire communications shift manager Karren Larking said they were called but could not gain access to the chopper as it was inaccessible by road. 

They assisted with the patients at the hanger.
