Fire service shift manager Carren Larking said two fire trucks were at the scene and two more were on the way.

Larking was unable to say if anyone was in the property at the time the fire broke out.

The road had been closed while firefighters worked to put out the fire.

A reporter at the scene said five fire trucks as well as a police car could seen.

By 1.10pm, the fire at the weatherboard house had been put out.

The house was set behind another on a quiet residential street.

There were burn marks around one window and a ladder could be seen leaning on the side of the house underneath another which firefighters had used to gain entrance.

The occupants of the house have been seen speaking to police. No-one was injured.

One neighbour said he had no idea how the fire had started.

He had been outside his home when he noticed smoke billowing from the house and went to check it out but emergency services were already on scene.

Another neighbour said they heard a 'bang' and ran out onto the street to investigate.

'I could see flames inside then house at that point. There were already a few other neighbours standing on the street with the family who lived in the house.'

He said it was been a 'bit of a shock' for such a quiet street.

A police spokesman said officers were at the scene, assisting firefighters with traffic management as the road had been closed.

St John spokeswoman Beverley Tse said St John was notified of the fire at 12.42pm but had not yet needed to send an ambulance.
