Forty minutes later, they responded to a two-vehicle crash on SH3 near Mangakowhai Rd.

One person was killed and another suffered serious injuries, police said in a statement.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

SH3 is closed and diversions are in place at Ruru St, Piopio, to the south, and Tikitiki Rd to the north.

Motorists should factor in up to 40 minutes extra to travel the detour, the Transport Agency said.

They should avoid the area if possible, it said.

It comes after a deadly weekend on Waikato roads. Four people were killed in three separate crashes on Saturday, one of which left an infant fighting for its life in the Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital.
