Five patients hospitalised after 'multi-vehicle' crash in Riverlands

Five people have been taken to hospital after four were trapped in a 'multi-vehicle' crash in Riverlands, Marlborough.

Police received calls of the crash on State Highway 1, between Cloudy Bay Drive and Hardings Rd, about 8am on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said four people were initially trapped in two vehicles. They had all been extricated.

There was a third vehicle in the crash, she said.

A St John spokesman said one patient with serious injuries had been flown to Nelson Hospital.

Four patients with moderate injuries had been taken to Wairau Hospital, he said.

The serious crash unit had been notified.

The south bound lane was initially blocked with stop/go traffic management in place.

Traffic was flowing in both directions by 9.50am.

A Nelson Marlborough Health spokeswoman said at 3.30pm all five patients were in a stable condition.
