Two people in custody after police operation near Waikeria Prison in Waikato

A man and a woman are in custody after a police hunt in south Waikato on Tuesday afternoon.

Police were alerted to an incident in which a shot was reportedly fired at a local property about 3.45pm in Waikeria.

The Armed Offenders Squad, a dog unit and the Eagle helicopter responded.

The pair fled the scene before police arrived. They were eventually located at another nearby property about 7pm.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter and cordons have been cleared.

Earlier, police had cordoned off Waikeria Rd as they looked for a person, a police spokeswoman said.

She said the matter was not directly related to the prison.
