Police have released the name of the man who died following an assault in the central city on Saturday.

A 58-year-old Lower Hutt man has been identified as the victim who died following an assault in Wellington’s central city last weekend.

Simon Strickland, of Waterloo, was critically injured in Cable St, outside Te Papa, about 7.15pm.

He died on Wednesday, after his life support was switched off.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to injure.

Police have not ruled out further charges and say they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the investigation.

They are still seeking witnesses and would like to speak to anyone who saw the assault or was in the Te Papa car park area on Saturday between 7pm and 7.30pm.
