Three people in hospital after overnight crash north of Taupō

Three ambulances and two helicopters were sent to an overnight crash in Wairakei, north of Taupō.
Three people were taken to hospital after the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 5.
Police were called to the stretch of highway between Palmer Mill Road and Tram Road about 12.20am on Monday, a police spokeswoman said.
St John sent three ambulances and two helicopters, a spokesperson said.
Two people were flown to Waikato Hospital by rescue helicopter: one in a serious condition and another in a moderate condition.
A third was taken to Rotorua Hospital in a moderate condition.
The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit investigated, and was open again by 6.30am.
