One dead and three injured in crash on State Highway 85 in Otago

One person has died and three people have been injured in a crash between a ute and a motorcycle in rural Otago.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they were called to the crash on Morrisons-Kyeburn Rd (State Highway 85) in the Round Hill area about 11.20am on Sunday.

In addition to the person who died, one person received serious injuries in the crash, one person had moderate injuries and one person had minor injuries.

The police serious crash unit was examining the scene and traffic management and diversions were in place. Motorists were asked to avoid the area, a police spokesperson said.

The person with serious injuries was flown by rescue helicopter to Dunedin Hospital while the other two were taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital, a St John spokesperson said.

In a release, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said the road was blocked south of Kyeburn.

An alternative route was available, it said.

The Queen's Birthday road toll now stood at two.

The first fatal crash happened when a ute crashed into a traffic light pole in the Auckland suburb of Waterview just after 3am on Sunday.

One person died and two people were injured, one seriously and one with minor injuries.

Emergency services also responded to another serious crash in Otago on Sunday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said a motorcyclisty had crashed at the intersection of Webster Ln and Old Dunstan Rd, in the Moa Creek area, about 11.40am.

A St John spokeswoman confirmed one person was seriously injured and was flown by rescue helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.

In another incident in Otago, a motorcyclist was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries following a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Webster Ln and Old Dunstan Rd, Moa Creek, at about 11.40am.
