Missing Waingaro River swimmer dies after water-related incident

A 28-year-old man has been confirmed dead after going missing while swimming in the Waingaro River, west of Ngāruawāhia, on Tuesday.

Police said that emergency services had received reports just before 1.45pm of a swimmer missing in the river.

Fire and Emergency dispatched a jetski to search the river and St John Ambulance was also in attendance.

The man was located, and attempts were made to resuscitate him.

However, he sadly died at the scene.

Police were making enquires in relation to the death on behalf of the coroner, who will release their findings in due course.

The death comes as police continue their search for another missing swimmer, in the Waikato River.

The Police National Dive Squad spent much of the day on Tuesday scouring the river for a man who disappeared while swimming there with a group of four others.

His body had not been found by late afternoon.
