A body suspected to be that of a man who went missing in the Waikato River on Monday has been recovered.

Police said on Wednesday afternoon that while formal identification was yet to be completed, they believed the body belonged to the man who went missing near Hamilton Gardens at 6pm on January 3.

“Police extends its condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.”

The death was being investigated by police on behalf of the coroner.

Family and friends held a vigil by the river and helped searchers with their efforts over recent days.

There have been an unusually high number of drownings across the country over the Christmas-New Year period.
