Nelson Fire Station put out three skip bin fires in the span of an hour on Wednesday night.

A set of “unusual” jobs saw a fire crew extinguishing three skip bins throughout the night.

Between 10.30pm and 11.30pm on Wednesday night, the Nelson Fire Station was called to three skip bin fires which was “quite unusual”, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) shift manager Brodie Keay said.

The first fire was reported at 10.30pm outside Nood Nelson near Halifax St.

He said cardboard in the bin was on fire and was extinguished by the crew.

Keay said during the crew’s return to the station, they passed a second skip bin fire near Rutherford Park at 11pm.

That fire was extinguished, before a third skip bin fire was reported at 11.30pm in Nelson’s Washington Valley.

Keay said sending a brigade “three times in one evening isn’t normal”.

All three fires were handed to police for further investigation, he said.
