St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the man was in a moderate condition following smoke inhalation and was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

The crews had extinguished the blaze shortly before 4.30pm.

Dunn said a fire investigator would be sent to determine the cause of the blaze. At this stage, it was not being treated as suspicious.

The blaze comes a day after a Christchurch man accidentally set his house on fire while reportedly looking under his bed with a lighter.

Emergency services were called to that fire, which was 'well ablaze' at a house on Aorangi St, Bryndwr, about on Wednesday evening.

An occupant of the house told Stuff  they were looking for something under their bed with a lighter when it caught fire.

The Bryndwr house was extensively damaged in the fire.
