Two people have been injured after a three-car crash on the Waimakariri Bridge in North Canterbury.

The northbound lane of State Highway 1 was blocked but has re-opened after the crash about 7.15am on Tuesday.

One person was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries, while another with minor injuries was treated at the scene, St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said.

A police spokeswoman said motorists should expect delays.

There was widespread ice on roads across the Waimakariri district on Tuesday, a Christchurch Traffic Operations Centre (CTOC) spokesperson said.

Motorists were reminded to drive with extreme care and reduce speed, the spokesperson said.

“Contractors are out spreading grit but there will still be areas where they haven’t reached yet.”
