WorkSafe inspectors heading to Gloriavale after claims of 20-hour work days

Gloriavale Christian community leaders have been accused of forcing some members to work more than 20 hours a day.

WorkSafe is sending inspectors to the Gloriavale Christian community to look into claims some members were forced to work more than 20 hours a day.

Newshub reported on Thursday that two community members had spoken out about incredibly long work days, demanded by “controlling” community leaders known as “shepherds”.

“Sometimes you could go two whole days and you get some sleep but then you're expected to go straight back to work,” one said.

A WorkSafe spokesman said inspectors would visit the community, at Haupiri, on the West Coast, to find out what work was being done and the risks involved.

“This includes the risks associated with fatigue and wellbeing. It will also involve requests for relevant documentation and speaking to volunteer workers and/or contractors.”

WorkSafe had not been notified of the claims before Thursday, the spokesman said. The visit was not an investigation, but a “proactive assessment”.

WorkSafe staff also visited Gloriavale on Monday after a report in July that a member cleaning a silo was overcome with fumes.

“The inspector…discussed WEPR (worker engagement, participation and representation), contractor management, training, emergency response and critical risks while on site.

“Machine guarding improvements were identified and discussed, and verbal direction given that these improvements be implemented.”
