Recap: 'Waiting for you to come home,' says mum of Whakaari/White Island victim

At 2.11pm on December 9, 2019, Whakaari, a volcano off the coast of Bay of Plenty, erupted. Forty seven people were on the island at the time. Twenty two died from the blast, while nearly all of the survivors suffered severe or critical injuries.
