A 2-year-old girl in Auckland has died in suspicious circumstances, police have confirmed.

Detective Inspector Warrick Adkin of Counties Manukau said the toddler died overnight at Starship Hospital.

The child was taken there in a critical condition on Sunday evening from an address in Weymouth, he said.

Warrick said the child’s injuries were believed to be “non-accidental” and the death was being treated as suspicious.

Police are undertaking a scene examination at a property in Weymouth, where the occupants are self-isolating, the statement said.

Warrick said police were speaking to the occupants as part of the inquiries. Officers attending the address were wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE).

A post-mortem examination was taking place on Monday morning.
