Three people killed in North Canterbury crash named

Three people killed when a man drove through a controlled intersection, and his car was T-boned by a milk tanker, can now be named.
The triple fatality crash happened at the intersection of South Eyre and Burnt Hill roads, just south of Oxford in North Canterbury, about 6.35pm on Sunday.

The victims were Jixuan Yin, 67, Ying Wan, 48, and Guhan Yin, 8, also known as Caroline. A teenage boy was also seriously injured and remains in hospital in a stable condition. All are from Christchurch.
Relatives of the family declined to comment on Wednesday.
It is understood Jixuan Yin was driving the car north along Burnt Hill Rd and was hit by a milk tanker travelling east along South Eyre Rd.

The intersection is controlled by give way signs in Burnt Hill Rd.
Central to the police investigation into thecrash will be how the driver failed to see the milk tanker coming from his left.
There are rows of hedging and trees near the intersection.
This year, 45 people have died on Canterbury roads, according to the Ministry of Transport. At the same time last year, 26 people had been killed on the region’s roads.
In 2017, 55 people died on Canterbury roads. It was the highest road toll since 2007 when 56 people died.
The toll in the region has surpassed 50 only three times since 2000.
