Emergency services were called to the beach just after 1.30pm after Carswell got into difficulty in the water.

Attempts to revive her didn’t work, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Water Safety New Zealand chief executive Daniel Gerrard said the country was now on track for one of the worst summers of water fatalities on record.

Lifeguards are urging the public to take care over the summer after an “alarming number” of water fatalities, including a child drowning in Northland’s Kai Iwi Lake.

As of Tuesday, the death toll in water fatalities is 27, passing the toll of 25 from the previous two summers.
