An 18-year-old male has been airlifted to Waikato Hospital following a serious crash, north of Matamata.

The teenager was driving the northbound car when he crossed the centre line and hit a truck on State Highway 27, near Ngarua, Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood said.

He was stabilised at the scene and flown to Waikato Hospital with a suspected head injury.

'The driver of the car was initially trapped and has since been freed and airlifted to Waikato Hospital,' Henwood said.

He said the driver was in a moderate condition.

'I don't know how long the road will be closed for.'

Diversions are in place at Walton, Campbell and Kereone roads, he said.

The Serious Crash Unit won't investigate as the injury wasn't serious.
