Police have identified the body found on the Raglan coast as missing fisherman Doyle Frickey.

The 67-year-old Hamilton man was last seen fishing on the Ruapuke Rocks on September 25.

His body was found on the shoreline north of Papanui Point, a rugged beach near Raglan, on Monday, December 4.

Police were alerted on Sunday evening after a man collecting paua spotted what he believed to be a body and boat debris on rocks near Papanui Point.

The discovery was in an area known as Stony Beach.

The man said he spotted a mass and smelled a strange odour, Waikato police Search and Rescue Sergeant Vince Ranger said on Monday.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
