Police have named David Barry Fisher, 26, of Tauranga, as the man who died in Lake Wanaka near Stevenson's Island on Friday.

Fisher was reported missing by friends after he swam out to retrieve a drifting boat. A friend went out to help but could not find him.

Despite an extensive search by Wanaka LandSar and Coastguard volunteers, he could not be found.

His body was retrieved by police divers on Saturday. A brief police statement was issued on Sunday, naming Fisher and adding: 'Our thoughts are with his family at this time.'
