Young man dies in New Year's Eve crash near Nelson that injures five

A crash that killed a young man near Nelson also injured five others.

A ute and a car collided between Bartlett Road and Blackbyre Road on the Appleby Highway west of Richmond about 9pm on Sunday night.

Police, Richmond volunteer fire crews, and two ambulances attended the scene.

A police media spokeswoman said a young, male driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene.

The five occupants of the other vehicle, including two children, were taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

None of the injuries were life threatening, and only one person remained in Nelson Hospital for further treatment, she said.

She was unable to provide any further details on the crash.

The road has reopened. It was closed while the serious crash unit attended the scene.

This crash, and one in Whangerei about on Sunday, brought the road toll in 2017 to 380.
