Soon-to-be residents of new Nelson residential development Marsden Park have snapped up available properties from its latest release as the new subdivision continues to grow.

The latest release of sections have sold out with the exception of one property, bringing the total number sold to around 70, said Marsden Park development spokesperson John McLaughlin.

He said about 60 houses in the development area between Nelson and Richmond were either complete or in the building process.

'It's gained great momentum,' he said.

'We are just about to release another 13 [lots] in the next month or so which are elevated sites with sea views.'

The development currently has resource consent for 130 lots, the rest of which will be released for sale over the next few months.

A further 220 lots were also awaiting a grant for resource consent, he said. He hoped the lots would be released in the next 18 months if the consent was granted.

He said the properties had received plenty of demand with each release, with a varied age-range interested in the area.

'It's across the board from young families to [older] people who are looking to shift into their last home,' he said.

'There is a lovely outlook there, it's urban but with a rural feel.'

He said there had also been interest from North Island buyers, as well as locals.

As each lot is sold, houses could be built in around four months after building consents were attained, he said.

Construction on the development was being carried out by a 'wide range' of building firms from around the region.

In a statement, the Nelson City Council said they were encouraging a range of housing choice's across the district. Statistics New Zealand projected for Nelson's population to grow by 5500 over the next twenty years which the Council estimated would result in an additional 2800 households in the region.
