A dog was left at a Northland animal shelter with 'horrific' injuries after allegedly being dragged along a road by a car.

Rescue charity Saving Hope Foundation said the dog, nicknamed BoyBoy, was left at Bay of Islands Animal Rescue centre by a person claiming to be his owner.

The dog was left with large wounds over much of his body.

The man allegedly told them the pet was injured when he forgot he had tied him to his car and drove off.

BoyBoy was later transferred to the Saving Hope Foundation in Silverdale, north of Auckland, and is now staying at a foster home while he receives treatment.

Saving Hope Foundation trustee Janine Hinton, said BoyBoy arrived in a 'pretty horrific' condition, with large open wounds across much of his body, face and legs.

'The owner was supposedly moving to Australia,' she said.

'He [BoyBoy] is the sweetest boy, that part of it that makes me so sad. Whether he did it by accident, how you can tie your dog to a towbar in a street and leave it?'

'The owner is not here holding him or paying for the bills,' she said.

The dog is staying with a veterinary nurse who changes his dressings.

'The wounds are too horrific for a Joe Bloggs to deal with,' Hinton said.

The foundation does not receive funding and Hinton said looking after a dog with such bad injuries was expensive.

The charity has started fundraising to help pay for his treatment and details of how people can donate are listed on the Saving Hope Foundation's Facebook page.

Once he has recovered he will be put up for adoption.

SPCA has been approached for comment.
