Unprovoked bus attack left Auckland teen with serious facial injuries

An Auckland teen was attacked while travelling on a bus into the city on Friday morning.
He suffered serious facial injuries when he was hit in the head with a metal rod.
Police are continuing to investigate the assault and are appealing for witnesses.

At about 9.15am on Friday the victim was travelling from Howick to Auckland City along Pakuranga Rd when they were assaulted.

An unknown woman hopped on the bus before assaulting the victim with an object, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant James Mapp said.
“This was an unprovoked assault, which left the victim with serious facial injuries,” Mapp said.
According to the NZ Herald, the victim was a 16-year-old schoolboy who had been listening to music and scrolling through his phone before being struck by the woman with a long metal rod.
The boy told the Herald he lost three teeth during the attack, and a further two were damaged.
Mapp said the offender then got off the bus before police arrived.
“We understand the fear and concern events like this inflict on the community and we will continue to pursue every lead to hold this person to account.
“Police have no tolerance for this type of crime or intimidation in our communities,” Mapp said.
Police are continuing to make enquiries into the attack and asked that anyone who had information contact police on 105 and quote file number 240628/8342.
