One dead after Ashburton fire

The fire happened on Glassey Dr in Ashburton overnight Saturday into Sunday.

A person is dead after an early morning house fire in Ashburton.

A police spokesperson confirmed the death, saying the person was found in the property on Glassey Dr.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson said crews were called to the Ashburton address around 12.45am on Sunday after reports of a house fire.

The two fire trucks that responded found a house ablaze. Police and Hato Hone St John ambulance services were also called out.

After putting the fire out, fire crews searched the property.

Police said they were looking into the cause of the fire, while FENZ said a fire inspector was expected to return to the property on Sunday.
