Butter back to $6.50 as grocery chain takes on soaring prices

Tuesday, 19 August 2025

Paddy Gower Has Issues reporter Karen O’Leary chats with Night ‘n Day’s Matthew Lane about helping Kiwis spread more for less.

A Kiwi-owned grocery chain is rolling back the clock on butter prices, offering 500g blocks for just $6.50 – the average price in August 2024.

The bargain is the brainchild of Paddy Gower Has Issues reporter Karen O’Leary, who investigated why butter prices have skyrocketed for the show, which is back this week on Three and ThreeNow.

Dairy prices have dominated headlines this year, with the average 500g block of butter costing $8.59 in July, a 42.2% increase compared to the same time last year.

O’Leary’s investigation led her to Kiwi grocery retailer Night ‘n Day, who she challenged to provide some relief for shoppers.

Night ’n Day’s general manager, Matthew Lane, has accepted Karen O’Leary’s challenge to slash the price of butter.

Night 'n Day's general manager Matthew Lane told O'Leary the company was aware of how current prices were affecting households.

'We're conscious that butter is a hard product to be able to afford at the moment.

“We're going to get 20,000 blocks of butter across the country and from Wednesday we'll hold that price at $6.50 until it sells out.”

The same blocks currently retail for upwards of $11.

O’Leary said the household staple shouldn't be treated as a luxury product.

“It’s hard to believe Kiwis are having to question whether butter is a product they can afford to add to their trollies.

20,000 specially priced 500g blocks of butter will be available nationwide at Night ’n Day stores from 8am on Wednesday, while stocks last.

“We want everyone to be able to spread some butter on their toast without worrying about it breaking the bank.”

The promotion will be available at Night ‘n Day stores nationwide from 8am on Wednesday, August 20, while stocks last.

The deal is available on all 500g blocks of salted butter, and to help spread the savings there's a limit of one per person.
