Man found dead on Taranaki beach identified by police

A man who was found dead on a beach in New Plymouth has been identified by police.

The man’s body was found on Fitzroy Beach around 6.50am on Monday.

Police said officers were providing support to his family after they had identified him.

“We would like to thank the members of the public who provided information to police,” a spokesperson said.

RNZ reported the body was found between the Fitzroy Surf Life Saving Club and the Waiwhakaiho River mouth.

Local resident Sam Whiteman told the Taranaki Daily News he noticed police on the beach at 7am.

By 10am, a worker at the nearby Fitzroy Golf Club told Stuff that police had left the scene.
