Police have launched an investigation in Paraparaumu after the death of a woman overnight.

Inspector Renée Perkins, Kāpiti-Mana Area Commander, said police were called to the address on Chums Rd at around 9.50pm on Tuesday night to a report of an assault.

“Despite the best efforts of police and other emergency services, the woman has sadly died at the scene,” Perkins said.

A 31-year-old man, known to the woman, is due to appear in Porirua District Court today charged with assault and breach of protection order.

A neighbour told Stuff she heard screams in the night, and woke to find police at the house on Chums Rd.

The house remained taped off by police on Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for Wellington Free Ambulance told Stuff that they attended the scene and referred questions to police.

“Police would like to advise the public that there will be an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues and that we believe there is no ongoing risk to the public,” Perkins said.

“Police are also working to support the family of the victim and offer our sincere condolences.”

CORRECTION: The man due to appear in court is 31-years-old. He was originally reported as 48-years-old, from information provided in error by police.
