An Auckland man has been charged with wounding with intent and reckless discharge of a firearm in relation to an incident in Hobsonville on Tuesday.
Police received reports at about 4.40pm of an altercation unfolding between two groups of people on Hobsonville Rd outside a Woolworths supermarket.
One man received moderate injuries in the incident and was transported to hospital with moderate injuries.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Renfree, of Waitematā CIB, said a firearm had been discharged towards a vehicle in the incident.
He stressed there was no suggestion the incident occurred inside the supermarket itself.
A worker at a nearby shop said they “didn’t see what exactly happened”, but witnessed part of the incident, including an SUV driving erratically in the car park outside the supermarket.
“I saw it, like, boost through the car park and drive down the wrong way of a one way [road] that we have. But I didn’t see anything that happened concerning the victim,” the shop worker who did not wish to be named told Stuff.
The witness said she heard two loud bangs when dealing with a customer in her shop, then raced out the door to see the car drive off. She also later saw the blood on the ground.
“I was serving a customer at the time, and we were like, ‘Oh, what was that?’ Maybe it might have been gunshots, or a [car] backfiring,” she said.
“We brushed it off until we saw the car, and then other customers were saying ‘did you see what happened?’ But, yeah, we didn’t really get any certain information.”
An RNZ reporter at the scene outside the Woolworths said the injured man could be seen bleeding from the left side of his face while being assisted by members of the public.
The police Eagle helicopter flew overhead while three police cars and an ambulance responded.
The 24-year-old man will be appearing in the Waitākere District court later on Wednesday.
Police believe this is an isolated incident and reassuring the Hobsonville community there is no ongoing risk.
Enquiries are ongoing to identify further offenders
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story said the injured man had been shot. Police only said he was injured with a weapon, and that no one was injured in relation to a firearm being discharged towards a vehicle. (Amended at 7.27pm on September 16)
