A motorcyclist is in a serious condition after crashing while fleeing police in Lower Hutt.

Hutt Valley Area Commander Inspector Wade Jennings said the incident began about 10.30pm when officers saw a motorbike being ridden dangerously on Fairway Drive.

The rider turned onto Taita Drive and, before police had signalled for them to stop, allegedly accelerated, overtook another vehicle, and failed to take a bend, crashing into a fence.

The rider suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to hospital, Jennings said.

The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene, and police inquiries into the crash are ongoing.
